Al Belanger is ABVSquared’s safety and security expert. He believes that in order for businesses to survive and thrive, safety must be a fundamental value – for owners, operators and their staff. Al helps his clients identify safety and security issues before incidents occur, and provides the guidance and practical wisdom to make sure worksites run faster, stronger and safer throughout the lifespan of the business.
Al will work with you before, during or after a safety or security incident to ensure that all your I’s and T’s are dotted and crossed. But more importantly, he’ll work with you to make sure your business is actually safe. From preventing break-ins and crime, to workplace health and safety audits, Al believes your success is intimately connected to the safety and security of all aspects of your business.
Al honed his expertise throughout his 25-year career at the University of Alberta in Protective Services, where he started as a patrol member in 1987, and worked his way up to managing the department for 12 years. That experience gave him insight into various aspects of safety and security, including risk management, computer security, physical security planning, handling investigations, and managing accidents. He has also taught tactical communications at MacEwan University for nine years, helping to train the next generation of police science and security management students.
Al is a skillful communicator and people-manager, and provides a no-judgement approach to dealing with safety. He meets you where you’re at, and coaches you on where you need to go – regardless of whether you’re starting your safety and security measures from scratch, or simply meeting your industry’s compliance guidelines.
Since leaving the University of Alberta, Al has turned his focus to workplace health and safety consulting. He has certification from the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, Alberta Construction Safety Association, as well as from the University of Alberta, all focused on occupational health and safety, risk management and safety auditing. While the much of his work is centred on Alberta’s oil and construction industries, Al has worked with clients in a diverse range of industries – from nightclubs to transportation, and can help you make sure your business is as safe and secure as possible, regardless of industry.
When Al’s not working, you’re likely to find him painting, enjoying food and wine, or on the golf-course. Or riding his motorcycle with his wife (helmet on, of course!).
